The Movements – Gurdjieff’s Sacred Dances

Deutsch🇩🇪
Русский 🇷🇺

The Movements

The sacred dances taught and developed by G. I. Gurdjieff, also known as Movements, are unique in their form.

Performing precise movements of the arms, legs, and head simultaneously, in rhythm with the music, requires a high degree of attention.

During the classes, the teacher demonstrates the movement sequences, which are then learned step by step by the group. No previous dance experience is required.

Comfortable, loose-fitting clothing and soft gymnastics shoes are sufficient for the classes.

The Key to Being

The Movements open a path toward the experience of presence and a deeper sense of one’s own being. Practising together in a group creates a special space that is only rarely accessible to an individual alone.

Music for the Movements

Music is an essential part of the Movement practice. It was created through the close collaboration between Gurdjieff and the composer Thomas de Hartmann.

“The ears alone are not enough for this music. One’s whole presence must be open to it.”
